Teams
Updated
A team is a named group of people inside a non-Personal organization, such as Marketing or Client X. Instead of sharing every site with every person, share the site with the team.
Create a team
Open Teams in the sidebar (it follows the organization you picked in the switcher), create a team and add people by e-mail. Someone without an account gets an invitation. The owner and admins of the organization manage its teams.
Share a site with a team
Open the site's Settings → Sharing and access, type the team's name in the add field and choose Viewer or Admin. The role lives on the share, not on the team, so one team can be a viewer on one site and an admin on another. Only the organization's owner and admins can attach teams, and only teams of the site's own organization.
How roles combine
Someone with access in several ways gets the strongest role of their direct share, their teams and organization admin. Adding or removing a team member changes their access to every site the team can see, immediately. Removing someone from a team never touches a role you gave them directly. Teams can't be Owner, and rollups are never shared with teams.
